History, Craft and Play Workshops

I’m a London mudlark with a creative permit, meaning I can make and do things with my finds, if they aren’t of any significant value, historical or otherwise. I make and sell jewellery and shadow boxes at fairs and on my website, but am also keen to more widely share and have fun with the vast amount of non-historical finds that I find on the foreshore.

I offer a range of workshops, suitable for all ages and generally accessible, but please do advise of any particular needs so I can ensure everyone enjoys their experience. They can be offered in schools, clubs, residential settings or as part of a teambuilding or other event. (I have on online basic DBS check).

Play

There’s something inherently fun about poking about in mud, and this messy/wet play experience can be tailored to any group.

After an appropriate introduction to the topic, participants (in groups of 2-4) will use their hands or plastic tools to find the treasures buried in large trays containing clean sand, pebbles and water – bringing the mudlarking experience safely indoors.

The treasure to be found will be tailored to the audience based on safety and will include genuine Thames finds plus fun keepsakes relevant to participants.

For groups of up to 8 participants.

Craft

For a sometimes messy but mostly dry experience, I offer craft sessions suitable for all ages. For example, an introduction to mudlarking followed by making mosaic art, shadowboxes or jewellery from river glass, ceramics and pipestems.

For groups of up to 12.

Creative challenges

Ideal for schools, I would talk about the history of the Thames, mudlarking and the modern situation (including the issues such as access and environmental concerns), and show some finds for inspiration before presenting a challenge to create something – write a story, an essay or create art.

For clubs, classes and whole schools.

History with a souvenir

The driest option of all! I will make a presentation, answer questions, show off some finds and everyone gets a small treasure, such as a piece of river glass, in a nice bag to take home as a souvenir afterwards. (Can be made less dry with wine for older audiences.)

For groups up to 30 or “a class”.
